maruk u

Mark U is an archaeologically important town in northern Rakhine State. It is preparing to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mrauk U contains some 200 Buddhist monuments such as temples, stupas and monasteries mostly built in the 15th and 16th centuries AD. It is also known for its old temples with wall paintings of Indian influence.

Mrauk Oo can reached by a 5-hour boat trip along the Kaladan River from Sittwe (Akyab), or a 90-minute flight from Yangon. Mrauk Oo is noted for its fort-like temples and pagodas of stone and brick, and for its statuary and relief, which are distinctive. About 8 km north of Mrauk Oo is the archaeological site of Wethali, another ancient capital dating back to the 4th century.
